Kongsvinger Museum

Kongsvinger Museum can be found at Gyldenborg, right underneath the 17th Century fortress, a large red brick building from 2000. Here, you can find a tourist information office, as well as two floors of exhibitions. This building is also where the administration and offices of Anno workers in southern Hedmark, including those who work at the Women's Museum, is located.

Kongsvinger Museum relates the history of the population in the area, poor as well as wealthy. The main exhibition is "1814 – A Different Story", exploring the living conditions in this district 200 years ago, when Norway was at war with Sweden, and Europe torn apart by the Napoleonic Wars. The exhibition describes the year of miracles, 1814, as well as the conflicts that followed, but the main focus is on the burden of war that was laid on the local civilians. Through paintings, pictures and objects, you can learn more about the population of Kongsvinger and surrounding areas, what they ate, what they believed in, how they dressed, what tools they used, and how they reacted to the grand political changes that were going on around them.
