The Swiss Chalet Villa

Rolighed was built in 1857 in what is known as Swiss Chalet style, characterized by rich ornaments and lace-like woodwork. The building was designed by Johan Heinrich Günter Schüssler (1835-1898), a 22-year-old from Thüringen in Germany.

Schüssler was to place his mark on the entire district. He built a large number of railwaystations and grand houses on wealthy farms like Nesteby and Gjøsegården. Rolighed and Lunderbye Nord were his first assignments in Kongsvinger. Notice the circles and the many-sided windows on the short walls, the extravagant wall decorations and the ornaments on the veranda. The decorative molding marking the trasition between the ground and first floors are particularly beautiful, and the building has decorative woodwork in all corners.
